About Aikido Hokuryukai

Aikido Hokuryukai, located in North York, Ontario, has been providing instruction in Aikido to students across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) including Markham, Richmond Hill, Toronto, North York, Vaughan and Woodbridge for over 20 years.

We focus on traditional Aikido

Our focus is exclusively on traditional Aikido, a Japanese martial art that emphasizes self-development, health, harmony with others and self-defence in a non-competitive environment.

Typical Aikido techniques consist of joint locks and throws, and learning to relax and fall safely from any position is an important part of Aikido practice for beginners. Our dojo’s focus is on the practice of effective martial arts techniques in a safe and rewarding way.

Male and female students of all levels of physical fitness and all levels of experience are able to challenge themselves, practice, and progress together in terms of their own abilities.

Aikido Classes for adults, kids, beginners and advanced students

We offer Aikido classes for kids, beginners, intermediate and advanced students, as well as classes in traditional Aikido weapons (“bokken” wooden sword, “jo” short staff, and “tanto” wooden knife.)

The Chief Instructor, Jim Barnes, is godan (5th degree black belt), a Canadian Aikido Federation shidoin (senior instructor), a member of the Canadian Aikido Federation (CAF) Technical Committee and a former CAF president. He has practiced Aikido for over 35 years.

Senior Instructor Yumi Nakamura is rokudan (6th degree black belt) and is one of the highest-ranked female Aikido instructors in Canada. She has taught Aikido seminars across the country and is a member of the Canadian Aikido Federation Examination Committee. She began her Aikido practice in Japan more than 40 years ago.

As well as being co-instructors, Jim and Yumi are married.

Two assistant instructors, Tom Lindsey and Vadim Potanine (both sandan, or 3rd degree black belts), also teach at the dojo. They have been members of Aikido Hokuryukai for many years, earning black belts there.
